JASON CALDERWOOD
ONLINE PORTFOLIO FOR HONORS ARTS DIPLOMA
Student Letter:
Most of my work consists of characters, geometric shapes, and exaggeration. Clearly, I lean a bit more on the cartoony side of art but that doesn't mean I lack knowledge of proportion and lighting as seen in my self portrait and 3D shapes works. When I portray, and often design, a character, I do my best to display as much personality as I can throughout expression, pose, and dress. I also enjoy integrating geometric shapes into my art to show this. The use of strong, jagged lines gives my character pieces something of a pop-art feel. I take advantage of cartoons' ability to exaggerate by generously doing so, both in static artworks and animation. When I animate, I try to push poses more than what is realistic. The point of animation is not to exactly represent how actions and emotions look like, but how it feels to experience them. I put this principle to work on my animation about autism. The noises, the sound waves, and the teacher's little “dance” when she yells don't look like a classroom, but it's how the experience feels. Overall, that's the most important thing I try to convey in my artwork: capturing experiences.
